Separate work and personal WhatsApp without a second phone

To separate work and personal WhatsApp without a second phone, add a second account in WhatsApp, or install WhatsApp Business on another number (dual SIM or eSIM). To stop depending on your phone, put the work number on the WhatsApp Business API with WYP.chat: you reply from the browser, with no second SIM, free to start.

Why separate work and personal WhatsApp?

Many freelancers start with their personal number. Then customers message at 10 pm, job photos mix with family photos, and a quote gets lost between two group chats.

  • Switch off in the evening, at weekends and on holiday, without switching off from friends and family.
  • Keep your personal photo, status and groups away from customers.
  • Find a customer’s history quickly, without digging through private chats.
  • Show a business profile: hours, address, catalogue, away message.
  • Be able to hand the number to a partner or an employee when the business grows.

One rule to know before choosing, as WhatsApp Help points out: a WhatsApp account is verified with one phone number only, and you cannot add a second one. So every option involves a second number.

Option 1: two accounts in the WhatsApp app

WhatsApp lets you have two accounts on one phone and switch between them. Each account has its own photo, about info, notification and privacy settings. It is an official, free feature.

  1. In WhatsApp, open Settings.
  2. Next to your name, tap the arrow, then Add account.
  3. Accept the terms, then enter the second number in international format.
  4. Enter the 6-digit code you receive by SMS or call.
  5. Enter a name for the work account and, if you like, a photo.

What to know

  • You need a second number that can receive the code: another SIM, an eSIM or another line.
  • The inactive account still shows alerts for messages and calls.
  • The second account is created from your main phone. You can link a device to it, such as a computer.
  • According to WhatsApp Help, account switching is not available in the WhatsApp Business app for now. So the work account is a regular WhatsApp account, with no business profile or away message.

Option 2: WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business with a dual SIM or eSIM

WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business are two separate apps, each tied to its own number. The same number cannot be used in both at once. With a dual SIM or eSIM, keep WhatsApp on your personal number and install WhatsApp Business on the work number.

  • Both apps are free. You only pay for the second line.
  • The work number gets the WhatsApp Business tools: business profile, catalogue, away message, greeting message, quick replies.
  • Two apps, so two separate notification settings on the phone.
  • The work account also opens on a computer through linked devices: up to 4 on top of the phone.

The catch: everything stays on the same phone. To really switch off, you have to mute WhatsApp Business in the evening.

Option 3: a second phone

This is the cleanest split: a work phone with WhatsApp Business that you switch off or leave at the office in the evening. No risk of sending the wrong photo to the wrong contact.

The cost: another device and another line, two phones to carry and charge. And if the work phone is left behind or breaks, customers get no reply.

Option 4: a business WhatsApp number on the API, run from your browser

Meta’s WhatsApp Business API connects a number to software rather than to an app on a phone. With WYP.chat, you reply to customers from your computer’s browser, or from your phone by installing WYP.chat like an app, with its own notifications.

Which number?

According to Meta, the number must be yours, have a country code and be able to receive an SMS or a voice call, just long enough to get the verification code. An office landline can work: no SIM is needed in your phone. A number already registered on WhatsApp must be removed from it first, unless it is in the WhatsApp Business app: coexistence then lets you keep it in the app and connect it to WYP.chat.

Getting started

  1. Create a WYP.chat workspace, no card needed.
  2. Connect the work number with your Meta account and confirm the code you receive (while Meta reviews WYP.chat, our team connects it with you).
  3. Reply from the browser, or install WYP.chat on your phone to get notifications.
  4. Choose what you are notified about: all messages, your conversations, or nothing.

What it costs

The WYP.chat free plan covers 1 number and 50 conversations a month. The Solo plan costs €29 per month excl. VAT, with unlimited conversations. On Meta’s side, incoming messages are free and, since 1 October 2026, replies within 24 hours of a customer’s message have been free up to 1,000 per month per number.

The trade-offs

  • After 24 hours without a customer message, only templates approved by Meta can be sent, and they are paid.
  • You need a Meta account to connect the number.
  • The number is no longer in a WhatsApp app, unless you use WhatsApp Business coexistence.

In return, the number is ready for what comes next: when someone joins you, they get their own login, without sharing a phone. Users are unlimited on every plan.

  • You just want to stop mixing work and personal: two accounts in WhatsApp.
  • You want the free business tools: WhatsApp Business on a second number, with a dual SIM or eSIM.
  • You want to switch off completely in the evening: a second phone.
  • You want to reply from your computer, with no extra SIM, and be ready for a partner to join: the work number on the API with WYP.chat.

Changing numbers without losing customers

If customers know your personal number, tell them before you switch, then answer on both for a while.

  • Message recent customers from the old number to give them the new one.
  • Update your Google Business Profile, website, quotes, invoices and email signature.
  • Add a wa.me link or a QR code for the new number to your documents.
  • On your personal number, answer work requests by pointing to the work number.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have two WhatsApp accounts on one phone?

Yes: two accounts in the WhatsApp app, or WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business side by side. Either way, each account has its own number.

Can I use the same number for WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business?

Not at the same time. According to WhatsApp Help, a number can only be used in one of the two apps at once, though you can move between them.

Do I need a second SIM for a business WhatsApp number?

For the in-app options, you need a second number, on a SIM or an eSIM. With the API, the number only has to receive the verification code by SMS or call: a landline can work.

Can I add WhatsApp Business as a second account in WhatsApp?

Not for now: according to WhatsApp Help, account switching is not available in the WhatsApp Business app. For business tools, install WhatsApp Business on a second number.

Does a business WhatsApp number cost anything?

The WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business apps are free. On the API, WYP.chat has a free plan, then Solo at €29 per month excl. VAT, and Meta charges for some outgoing messages.

How can I reply to customers from my computer?

With the app, link a computer to the account through WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. With the API and WYP.chat, you reply directly in the browser.
