A blocked or restricted WhatsApp Business account: what you can do
What you can do depends on what is blocked: in the WhatsApp Business app, a restricted account needs no action (the restriction ends by itself) and a banned account is challenged with “Request a review” in the message shown; on a number connected to the API, you request a review in Business Support Home at Meta. Only WhatsApp can lift a block: no outside service can do it for you.
First: app or API?
Meta has two sets of rules, one for the WhatsApp Business app and one for the platform (the API). If you write from your phone with the app, the first applies. If you write from software connected to the number, such as WYP.chat, the second does. If you use the number both ways, read both parts.
| WhatsApp Business app | Platform (API) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | A message in the app: your account is restricted, or the number cannot use WhatsApp. | A notice in Business Support Home, in the notifications centre, in a WhatsApp Manager banner and by email to admins. |
| Meta’s first step | A temporary restriction if the activity looks like spam or automated or bulk messages. | A warning naming the policy you broke. |
| How long | Restriction: until the time shown in the app runs out. Ban: no time limit. | 1 or 3 days without templates; 5, 7 or 30 days without any messages; a lock with no time limit. |
| How to challenge it | Ban: “Request a review” in the app. Restriction: nothing to do. | “Request a review” in Business Support Home. Not every spam block can be appealed. |
| When the answer comes | Most reviews are handled within 24 hours. | Usually within 24 to 48 hours. |
WhatsApp Business app: restricted or banned account
Restricted account: nothing to do
If the app says your account is restricted, or may soon be, you do not have to do anything: the restriction ends by itself when the time is up and WhatsApp tells you with a notification. To see the time left, open a new chat and pick a contact you have never contacted. The likely cause is activity that looks like spam or like automated or bulk messages.
- You can carry on with the contacts and groups you already have.
- You cannot start a chat or a call with a new contact.
- You cannot create a group or add members to one.
- You cannot use linked devices.
Banned account: request a review
A banned account shows a message saying that number cannot use WhatsApp and that you can request a review. Here are the steps.
- In the message, tap “Request a review”. You do it from the app itself.
- Wait for the answer: according to WhatsApp, most reviews are done within 24 hours.
- If the message has no such button, the ban is final, with no appeal.
- Contacting WhatsApp another way does not speed anything up.
- If your account is banned, your Meta Verified subscription is cancelled automatically, with no refund where the rules were broken.
- According to WhatsApp’s general-public help page, each request covers one number only, and your history and backups stay out of reach while the account is banned.
An outside service can neither ban nor unban
According to WhatsApp’s help page, third-party services can neither ban nor unban an account: only WhatsApp can. If someone offers to “unblock” your number, that service cannot do what it promises. Request the review yourself, in the app.
Platform (API): warning, restrictions, lock
Meta enforces against WhatsApp Business accounts that repeatedly break its messaging policy, commerce policy or terms. A warning comes first, naming the policy you broke. If it happens again (spam, a template in the wrong category or high-risk categories), restrictions of increasing length can follow.
| Step | What is blocked | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Warning | Nothing yet. The account is told which policy it broke. | Not applicable |
| Template restriction | Sending Marketing, Utility and Authentication templates, and adding phone numbers to the account. | 1 or 3 days |
| Message restriction | Sending any message, and adding phone numbers to the account. | 5, 7 or 30 days |
| Account lock | Sending any message. | No time limit: only an appeal lifts it |
| Disabling | The account is permanently removed from the platform. | Permanent, if nothing changes after several warnings and blocks |
Some serious cases skip the ladder and lead to immediate removal: child exploitation, scams, terrorism or the sale of illegal drugs. Meta may also limit or remove a business that receives excessive negative feedback from users.
Where to see it
- Business Support Home, in Meta Business Suite (All tools) or in Business Manager, under Account Overview.
- The Business Manager notifications centre and a banner in WhatsApp Manager.
- An email to every Business Manager admin: keep their details up to date so it arrives.
- The account_update webhook, for those subscribed to it (your software provider, for example).
Each notice says which policy was broken, with examples of what is and is not allowed, any active restrictions and what happens if it recurs, how to avoid further violations and how to appeal.
How to appeal
- Open Business Support Home and choose the WhatsApp Business account concerned.
- Pick the violation from the list and click “Request Review”.
- In the window that opens, add the details that support your case, then submit.
- The request moves to the in-review tab. The decision arrives through Business Manager, usually within 24 to 48 hours. The violation either stays unchanged or is reversed.
If it is reversed, the account returns to its previous status. A restricted or disabled account can also appeal or acknowledge the notice. Be aware that not every spam violation can be appealed, and sometimes you have to wait for the restriction to end before messaging again.
Before you are blocked: the common causes
This list comes only from the official sources. It is not exhaustive, but these are the causes Meta and WhatsApp name.
- Spam, or activity that looks like it.
- Automated or bulk messages sent from the app, which can restrict the account.
- A template in the wrong category. The rule is in the categories guide.
- High-risk categories: adult content, sale of alcohol and tobacco, drugs, gambling and unsafe supplements.
- Too much negative feedback from customers (blocks, reports). The number’s quality rating measures it.
To lower the risk, Meta asks you to read its commerce and messaging policies, hear about notices quickly (by email, in Business Support Home or through the account_update webhook) and correct your behaviour fast, before more warnings or restrictions arrive. And to write only to people who agreed to receive your messages.
What WYP.chat does, and what it does not
WYP.chat cannot prevent a block, lift one, or request the review for you. What it does:
- When a number is connected, the owner or an administrator reads and confirms “WhatsApp rules: prohibited sectors” once for the workspace (Settings › Channels).
- It shows each number’s status and quality in Settings › Channels, for example “Operational”, “Suspended by WhatsApp” or “Access removed in Meta”. It reads them again at most once an hour, when you click “Refresh”, and as soon as Meta reports a change.
- It alerts owners and administrators when one of these problems appears: low quality, suspended number, access removed or payment method missing. A banner shows on the channel, a notification arrives in the app and, if “Channel health” is ticked, a message goes to Slack. The alert goes out once each time the problem appears.
- In campaigns, it always leaves out contacts who replied STOP or switched off your offers in WhatsApp. That is one way to get fewer blocks and reports.
The details of a violation and the review request are handled at Meta (Business Support Home) or, for the app, in the app itself. Keep the details of your account’s admins at Meta up to date: the notice arrives by email.
