WhatsApp coexistence: keep the Business app and let your team reply from WYP.chat

WhatsApp coexistence lets you keep the WhatsApp Business app on your phone while your whole team replies from WYP.chat, on the same number. You keep your channels, catalogue, status updates and calls in the app. WYP.chat imports your contacts and up to 6 months of conversations, and shows the replies you send from your phone in the same thread as your team’s.

Morning Ben, I’m on a job until lunchtime. Let me check the diary and get back to you. 08:47

Hi Ben, it’s Imogen from the team. Mark can come at 2 pm today. Does that suit you? 09:06
Perfect, thanks. I’ll be in. 09:08

At a glance
  • Same number, same app
  • The whole team in WYP.chat
  • 6 months of history imported
  • Open the app at least every 14 days
  • App messages stay free

What you keep in the app

Your number, business name and phone do not change. Customers keep writing to the same number. According to Meta’s coexistence page, these features stay managed in the WhatsApp Business app, because the API does not support them.

App, API or coexistence: which to choose? →
Channels, status updates and profile
You post your channels and status updates from the app, as before. The business profile (name, address, website) is also edited there.
Catalogue and orders
The catalogue tools stay in the app.
Voice and video calls
You keep making and receiving calls from your phone.
Greeting and away messages, quick replies, labels
These app tools do not change.
Groups
They stay in the app, but do not reach WYP.chat.
Your replies from the phone
You can still reply to a customer from the app. Meta passes them on to WYP.chat, and they appear in the thread under the name “WhatsApp Business app”.

What WYP.chat imports when you connect

During the connection, the app asks whether you agree to share your history. If you decline, the connection still goes through, without the conversations.

WYP.chat AI agents →
The last 6 months of conversations
Only one-to-one chats are imported. They arrive closed, with no unread messages or notifications, and a line separates them from new messages.
Your contacts
Contacts join the WYP.chat directory under the name you gave them.
Media from the last 14 days only
Photos, videos and documents are imported only if they date from the 14 days before you connected. For older messages you see the text and a note that there was a file.
Everything after that, as it happens
Once connected, messages sent and received show up in both places: the app and WYP.chat.
The AI agent stays quiet when you reply
A reply sent from the phone counts as a team reply: your AI agent stays silent in that conversation.

What changes in the app

Coexistence has a cost: a few app features switch off. That is a Meta rule, not a WYP.chat choice.

Broadcast lists turned off
You cannot create new ones, and existing lists become read-only. To write to many customers, use WYP.chat campaigns, with Meta-approved templates.
Disappearing messages, view-once messages and live location
Meta turns them off in one-to-one chats.
Groups not synced
They are not imported into WYP.chat. The team working in WYP.chat cannot see them.
Linked devices logged out
When you connect, WhatsApp Web and any other linked devices are logged out. Link them again from the app: up to 4 linked devices, all except WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS, which are not supported.
Editing or revoking a message
Meta says this becomes possible in one-to-one chats.

The real limits

Five conditions to know before you start. They come from Meta, except the last one.

The 24-hour window explained →
Open the app at least once every 14 days
If the app goes unused for about 14 days, Meta detaches the number from WYP.chat and you have to reconnect it. WYP.chat warns you if it happens.
A fixed throughput of 20 messages per second
Meta sets this rate for a number used in both the app and the API. It is enough for small and medium sends, not for very large volumes.
A customer who writes just before you connect
Their message does not open a 24-hour window on the API side. Reply from the app, or with a Meta-approved template. Their next message opens the window as usual.
App version 2.24.17 or later
Update the WhatsApp Business app before you start.
Connection with our team, for now
WYP.chat is still waiting for Meta’s approval as a provider. Until then, our team connects the number with you.

What you pay

Coexistence adds no extra charge at WYP.chat. At Meta, it depends on where the message is sent from.

WhatsApp Business message pricing by country →
From the app: free
Meta states that messages sent from the WhatsApp Business app remain free. They do not create or extend a 24-hour window.
From WYP.chat: Meta’s rules
Messages sent through the API follow Meta’s rate card, by category and by the customer’s country. You pay Meta directly, with your own payment method, with no margin added by WYP.chat.

Turn on coexistence in 3 steps

Allow a few minutes, phone in hand.

  1. 1 Update the app You need version 2.24.17 or later of the WhatsApp Business app. Create your WYP.chat workspace, no card needed.
  2. 2 Tick the coexistence box In Settings, Channels, add a WhatsApp channel and tick “This number is already used in the WhatsApp Business app”. In Meta’s window, choose your number and scan the code with the app. Until Meta approves WYP.chat, our team does this step with you.
  3. 3 Agree to share your history In the app, confirm that you share your history: WYP.chat imports your contacts and 6 months of conversations. Then link your devices again, as they were logged out when you connected.
Plans

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep the WhatsApp Business app on the same number?

Yes. With coexistence, the number works in both the app and WYP.chat. Open the app at least once every 14 days, otherwise Meta detaches the number.

What is WhatsApp coexistence?

It is a Meta option that connects a number to the WhatsApp Business API without removing it from the WhatsApp Business app. Messages sent and received are mirrored on both sides.

What do you lose with coexistence?

Broadcast lists are turned off, groups are not synced, and disappearing messages, view-once messages and live location are switched off in one-to-one chats. Linked devices are logged out when you connect and have to be linked again.

Are messages sent from the app charged?

No. Meta states that messages sent from the app remain free. Those sent from WYP.chat follow Meta’s rules and are paid to Meta directly.

What happens if I do not open the app for two weeks?

After about 14 days without using the app, Meta detaches the number from WYP.chat. You have to reconnect it, and WYP.chat warns you.

Can I send a free-form reply from WYP.chat to a customer who wrote just before I connected?

Not straight away: their message did not open a 24-hour window on the API. Reply from the app, or with a Meta-approved template. Their next message opens the window.

Can I go back?

Yes. Meta describes a disconnect button in the app, in the account settings under Business Platform. The number stays in the WhatsApp Business app.
