What is a WhatsApp BSP (Solution Partner, Tech Provider)?
A BSP (Business Solution Provider) is a company authorised by Meta to offer the WhatsApp Business API to other businesses; Meta now talks about Solution Partners, Tech Providers and Tech Partners.
The definition: a partner authorised by Meta
A BSP, short for Business Solution Provider, is a company that gives you access to the WhatsApp Business API: it connects your number to its software and sometimes handles billing, integration help and support.
BSP is the acronym you meet most often in the market. In its current documentation, Meta describes these companies as WhatsApp authorised service providers and sorts them into three statuses: Solution Partner, Tech Provider and Tech Partner. Meta still occasionally uses the acronym BSP, but its current statuses are those three.
The three statuses side by side
| Solution Partner | Tech Provider | Tech Partner | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offers its clients all the services of the platform | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Has a line of credit | Yes | No | No |
| The client adds their own payment method with Meta | No, the partner shares its line of credit | Yes | Yes |
| Can invoice API usage itself | Yes | No, Meta invoices it | No, Meta invoices it |
| Is a Meta Business Partner | Yes | No | Yes |
A Tech Provider bills for its own services, such as the software and support, and Meta bills the client for API usage. Meta points out that becoming a Solution Partner is a lengthy process.
What it means for you
- Billing. With a Tech Provider, Meta bills you for paid messages with your own payment method, and the software is billed separately. With a Solution Partner, billing can go through the partner.
- Ownership of the account. The WhatsApp account, the number and the business portfolio are yours. Meta has dropped the “on behalf of” model, where the partner owned the account: accounts created that way were to be transferred to their clients by 1 October 2025.
- What your customers see. WhatsApp tells them in the chat that the business relies on a partner or a Meta service to manage the conversation.
- The weight of the status. A Tech Provider has had its business verified by Meta and its app approved to access its clients’ accounts. Ask your provider which status it holds and what it will bill you for.
A business with its own developers can also use the Cloud API directly, without a partner. Conversely, a provider without API access can only help you through Meta Business Suite: it needs a verified business portfolio, and you must share your WhatsApp account with it.
And WYP.chat?
WYP.chat is software that connects to Meta’s Cloud API. Its status with Meta is set out on the page that introduces the publisher, which is updated when it changes.
Example
Illustrative case: a garage compares two WhatsApp messaging tools. The first is a Tech Provider: Meta bills the garage for paid messages, with its payment method, and the software is billed separately. The second is a Solution Partner: it can share its line of credit and invoice API usage itself. In both cases, the number and the WhatsApp account stay with the garage.
Frequently asked questions
Is BSP still an official status at Meta?
In its current documentation, Meta talks about Solution Partners, Tech Providers and Tech Partners. BSP remains a common acronym in the market, which Meta still occasionally uses.
What is the difference between a Solution Partner and a Tech Provider?
A Solution Partner has a line of credit, which it can extend to its clients, and can invoice them directly for API usage. A Tech Provider does not: its clients add their own payment method, and Meta bills the API usage.
Do you need a BSP to use the WhatsApp Business API?
No, but it is the most common route for a business without developers. Meta’s documentation is written for developers: for everyone else, Meta points to its Partner Showcase, its directory of partners.
Does the partner become the owner of my account?
No. The WhatsApp account, the number and the business portfolio are yours, and the partner only gets access if you allow it. Meta has ended the “on behalf of” model, where the partner owned the account in place of its client.
Who bills for WhatsApp messages?
It depends on the status. With a Tech Provider, Meta bills the client for API usage, and the client adds a payment method, while the provider bills its other services. With a Solution Partner, billing can go through the partner, which has a line of credit.
Can you change partner without changing number?
Yes, in the new account model that Meta is rolling out: the client shares their WhatsApp account with the new partner, without migrating their number, and ongoing conversations continue. Message templates, however, stay in the previous partner’s Messaging account.
