What is WhatsApp Embedded Signup?
Embedded Signup is the Meta window that opens inside a partner’s software to connect your WhatsApp number to the API: you sign in to Meta, choose your portfolio, your WhatsApp account and your number, and they stay yours.
The definition in two minutes
Embedded Signup is the Meta interface that lets a business connect its WhatsApp number to the API without writing code. The partner, meaning the software you use, places a button or a link on its website or in its customer area. It opens a Meta window that works on a computer or a phone.
Meta sums up its role in three tasks: gather information about the business, automatically create the WhatsApp accounts the platform needs, then give the partner access to those accounts so it can provide its messaging services.
A partner can only offer it once Meta has approved its app to access its clients’ accounts.
What the window asks you for
- Sign in with your Facebook or Meta Business account.
- Accept Meta’s terms of service and allow the partner to access your WhatsApp accounts.
- Enter your business phone number, then verify it with a code sent by text message or phone call.
- Choose or create your business portfolio and your WhatsApp account.
- Enter the display name shown in place of your number in WhatsApp.
Meta is rolling out a version where the number is asked for first, before the portfolio and account are chosen: depending on the business, the order of the screens can therefore vary. The partner can also pre-fill some details, which shortens the window.
What gets created, and who owns it
At the end, Meta has created or linked your business portfolio, your WhatsApp account, a Messaging account set aside for that partner and your number. The partner gets access to those accounts, within the permissions you have granted.
The business owns all the accounts created. It can use them with other Meta solutions, such as Click to WhatsApp ads, and keeps full access to WhatsApp Manager: the partner cannot restrict it.
Payment for messages is then settled on the Messaging account. A partner with a line of credit can share it with you; otherwise, you add your own payment method.
A number already in the WhatsApp Business app
If the partner has switched coexistence on and you enter a number that is already used in the WhatsApp Business app, the window moves by itself to a suitable path: you confirm the connection from the app and choose whether or not to share your history. The number stays in the app.
What it means for a small business
You do not need a developer: the partner has already built in the window, and all that is left is to fill it in. The business stays the owner of its accounts, which matters if it ever changes software: the number, the WhatsApp account and the portfolio do not change hands.
Meta does not require business verification to start sending messages. Verification does unlock higher limits and Official Business Account status.
Example
Illustrative case: a wine shop wants several people to reply from its WhatsApp number. In the software it has chosen, it clicks the connection button, signs in to Meta, enters its number and picks its portfolio. Once the window is done, the software takes over. The WhatsApp account and the number stay with the shop: if it changes software, it will share them with the new one.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a developer to use Embedded Signup?
No. The partner has already built the window into its software. You sign in to Meta, enter your number and choose your accounts.
Who owns the accounts that are created?
The business does. According to Meta, businesses connected through Embedded Signup own all of their WhatsApp accounts and keep full access to WhatsApp Manager, which the partner cannot restrict.
Can you keep the WhatsApp Business app on your number?
Yes, with coexistence, if the partner has switched it on. When you enter a number that is already used in the app, the window moves to that path.
Do you need to verify your business to sign up?
Not to start sending: Meta no longer requires it to get going. Business verification then helps you get higher limits and Official Business Account status.
Who pays for messages after sign-up?
It depends on the partner. A Solution Partner can share its line of credit with you. With a Tech Provider, you add your own payment method to the Messaging account, and Meta bills you for paid messages.
