Message retention period

Updated on 2 min read

WYP.chat keeps your workspace’s messages for 24 months by default, then deletes them automatically. The owner and admins can shorten this to 12 or 6 months in Settings, Workspace and members tab, Message retention section. A shorter period limits the personal data you keep, as the GDPR requires.

Steps

  1. Open Settings, Workspace and members tab, then the Message retention section. Two-factor authentication must be on for your account.
  2. In Keep messages for, choose 6 months, 12 months or 24 months (default).
  3. If you shorten the period, a box shows how many messages are affected, for example “Switching to 6 months will delete about 1,200 messages older than 11/04/2026”. Click Confirm the reduction, or Cancel.
  4. If you lengthen the period, it is saved right away: nothing is deleted.

What is deleted

After the chosen period, based on the date of each message:

  • messages received and sent, on every channel;
  • their files: photos, voice notes, videos and documents;
  • voice note transcripts, internal notes, your AI agent’s suggestions and summaries, and thread events;
  • conversations left empty, with their tags and notifications.

What is kept

  • contacts and their profiles;
  • records of permission for offers (given and withdrawn);
  • refusals: STOP and blocked contacts, even after a contact is deleted (see how to delete contacts);
  • the audit log, which cannot be edited or erased;
  • orders, and campaign figures (sent, read, replies), without the text of the messages.

7-day delay

After a reduction, nothing is deleted right away: the previous period still applies for 7 days. The date of the first deletion is shown in the section, and you can change your mind until then. Deletion then runs in batches, without slowing the app down.
